Manager reactions.

Thirty seconds after I walked in the door to work last night, I got a call that one of my family members was in the hospital and it was serious. I started to cry immediately and literally ran through the kitchen to tell the manager I had to leave. I don't know how coherant I was, and I was out the door again less than a minute later. The next couple of hours were very stressful and confusing; eventually, it ended up that I had to stay home while everyone else went to see her (on the other side of the state). Once they got on the road, I went back to work--I'd run out of there in a total panic, and I knew my coworkers were worried.

When I got there, I told the manager what was going on (I won't go in to the details here, but it was a really close call. Like died on the table sort of stuff. I hate the fact that I'm not with my family right now.). And then I told him that if he really needed me there I could pull myself together. I was supposed to close, and I could have managed it if I had to. His response was to stare at me for several seconds and then tell me "I guess we've got it covered" before staring at me some more. His face clearly said he thought I should stay, but he didn't want to say it because he knew it would be insensitive.

I fucking hate that sort of passive-aggressive shit. If you need me to be there, just fucking tell me. Don't try that subtle guilt trip shit on me. Even more infuriating is the fact that this was the middle of the dinner rush, and the place wasn't even half full. I clearly was not needed. So I didn't stay. Which means I'll probably be on his shit list for another month or so, but whatever.

Your manager is a fucking asshole. I'm so sorry.

My mother died in february from battle cancer for 7 years. the couple of months before she passed away, I was in and out of work just like what you described in your post. Most of my managers were understanding and two of them are the sort that I could talk to about anything. The GM was pissed off I called out of work the NIGHT my mother died. WTF! I also had to ask him not the schedule me, as he thought it was somehow appropriate to schedule me to work the sunday after my mom died (on a friday). Some people just don't get it. What a fucking jerk.

One of our servers' sisters died while she was at work one night. She got the call and they expected her to finish out her shift and find people to cover for her the rest of the week. :/

I'm so sorry that happened to you- some people are just too self-centered to care, but it's funny what happens when THEY are the ones with an emergency. I hope everything is all right now, or at least you have some time off!!

I am so sorry hun. I've been in a situation like that and was fortunate enough to have a manager that was sympathetic, but I've had it the other way too.
I hope you family member is OK.

I hope everything turns out okay, saying a prayer for you and your family. I am blessed in that my managers tend to be pretty understanding about huge emergencies, especially because I work with a bunch of twenty-somethings who think that an impromptu party is a huge emergency, and they will cheerfully claim a death if needs be to leave in time for the party. I have worked with managers in the past, however, who would have been irritated if I was having a heart attack, so I know how that goes. God bless you!

Hope all is well with you. Some people just don't have a clue how to react in certain situations. The sad thing is they are often in management positions. Go figure...
