If your friends don't tip then they're no friends of mine.

A group of seven college-age kids came in the other night; they're friends of one of the hostesses. She always puts them in the section of a server she likes because she thinks they're fun. Unfortunately, the other night that was me.

They ran my ass off for an hour, made constant just-kidding-but-not-really jokes about getting things free, sent back a steak claiming there was a hair on it, and spilled drinks all over torn up napkins and thrown food scraps while they ran up a $72.43 bill. They left $73. Then a couple of them sat at the bar to drink, and tried to wheedle the bartender in to serving them after close.

Since she's served them before and knows they don't tip the bar either, they didn't get any beer.

Is it possible to refuse to wait on them. I can't believe that sh*t. How immature.

Otherwise tell the hostess her friends are jackwagons and she is a tool for giving them to anyone.

Not so easy to refuse service in situations like that. It's usually reserved for lude and rude comments but even then servers tend to just take it with a grain of salt.

Most likely the hostess is a jerk too if her friends act like that. Probably no one even wants to work with her ever.

visions unto myself

I wish these jerks would do something to warrant refusing service! Sadly being cheap isn't an allowable reason.

The hostess is really nice; she gets really defensive when we tell her they don't tip, like we're saying it's her fault. She's being trained to serve soon--she'll understand!

thats some bullshit. I would've told her to never seat them with me again, and if she did, then they would get exactly what they're paying for... nothing. I was afraid of a similar situation the other night, the hostess' sister and sister's boyfriend in my section, and they got a discount, too... lucky for me they tipped over %20, and based on the original total at that. (it WAS an extremely slow night, as it was snowing, so hostess was the one who dropped off the credit card slip. perhaps she convinced her sis to tip well)

Glad you didn't get screwed! It's always tricky with friends and family!

If a coworker's friends or family tip for shit or stiff me, I make them clean the table. Fuck you if your friends/family don't have any manners and don't EVEN put them in my section again.
