Never a dull moment.

I had plenty of customers that would usually have irritated me, tonight. Nothing fazed me though, and my tips were pretty damned good; amazing what six inches will do. Yeah, I just said that.

We did have a pretty spectacular scene toward the end of the night, though. This big guy got up and then dropped to the floor like he'd been pole-axed. He lay there for a while and said he'd be fine, that his blood sugar was low, then finally got up, headed to the bathroom -- and freaking passed out, dropped to the floor, and shit himself.

The paramedics were called and he was taken to the hospital. I happened to be walking by early on when he was just laying on the floor, and his wife assured me he was fine. "He took his insulin and then the food took too long to get here," she said. Uhhh .... why would you do that before even getting your food?

(ETA: A couple of people in the comments have said that's not correct and many diabetics inject before meals. So now I kind of feel like an asshole and have changed the post a bit.)

if you are that badly diabetic, cary food on you. sigh, i feel bad for the guy, but seriously, learn to manage your disease without blaming a restaurant for bad food timing!!!!

My friend who is diabetic injects inject insulin before her meal, but not until it arrives.

my husband who's a type 1 diabetic injects his insulin before each meal. hard to imagine the insulin kicking in that quickly though unless his blood sugar was already dropping when he took the shot.

Totally sucks for the guy, but passive-aggressively blaming the restaurant doesn't help anyone...sounds like a very fragile diabetic. OT, but I was wondering if you could add me to your blogroll, purplegirl. Normally I'd email you but I can't find your address on the blog...anyway, thanks, love your blog btw.

Its his job to manage his symptoms. If the food turned up to the table and had to be taken away due to a bad ingredient (say he requested no cheese or no peanuts) and he didn't realise until after he'd done the insulin shot THEN they would have a point (albeit only a slight one).

And why wouldn't you tell your server that you are a diabetic and needed some kind of food quickly? Hello!!! It's called personal responsibility buddy...

Thank you! I was shocked the guy didn't ask for some crackers or anything. Only thing I can think is maybe he's still new to the injection stuff.

Its a nasty disease to have and one I narrowly avoided getting myself. (The price you pay for overindulging on bad foods)

But the onus lies with him, restaurant staff cant be expected to read minds nor can anyone expect restaurants, which prepare your food fresh when you order it, to have it ready in a couple of minutes especially if its during a busy period.

Its easy to blame others when something goes wrong but it takes strength of character to admit when you messed up and accept the consequences
