Oh look, it's a small messy human.

I got stiffed tonight by a couple who were there with their two children. One was five or six, the other a baby just sitting on her own. She was a cute enough kid, I guess; totally bald and with a bigass flower attached to her head with a headband. The girl who was old enough to speak ordered her own food (which they naturally had a free coupon for); the baby just hung out flailing her fat little arms and looking around, as babies are wont to do.

When babies like that look at me, or grab my apron, or basically do something that demands attention, I'll give it. Otherwise, I treat them like a grabby piece of furniture, carefully setting things out of their reach and being sure not to hold things over their squishy little heads. Mom and dad got perfect service, quick and efficient and friendly. They said their food was delicious. And yet they left me a big fat nothing, and I suspect it's because I didn't fawn over their youngest crotchspawn. I did say she had adorable little shoes, isn't that enough?

I don't know - considering the young family and having a coupon tells me it is more their downright budgeting [they can "afford" to eat out but not tip- cheap jerks] as opposed to not fawning over their kid.

Still sucks airs tho'. Sorry.

dont feel bad, i had a table a mom and granma and little baby, and as a mother of 3 girls, i DID fawn all over their little one, playing peekaboo and such. chatted it up with mom and grandma. everythingwas wonderful...also a big fat ZERO. eh. cheap people come in all types i guess.

People are scraping up enough to eat out and forgetting they need enough for a tip too. Order takeout and pick it up if you can't afford dining out and a waitstaff.

If I genuinely like the kid, I'll take a special interest but I don't go way out of my way to impress parents by cooing over their kid, because I don't think it makes a difference. There are two kinds of parents: the kind who tips well and the kind who don't tip at all. I don't typically get any who tip in between. The reason? The cool ones just don't want to cook and can afford to eat out. The other ones can only afford to eat out if they use a coupon and don't tip. Eh.

I have had some experience lately in international departure areas in the airport where I work where certain people from certain countries make you run around and leave nothing. GRRRR

Sorry you had that experience. Chiming in as a parent who does tip when we can "afford" to eat out -- meaning, we can only afford it if we can tip, of course. But I hate being stereotyped as a "family = won't tip" and getting substandard service for it, which makes me not want to tip well... (I know you didn't do that.) A few bad eggs spoil it for us all!
